The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office and members of 17 other agencies made 94 arrests and citations related to human trafficking, prostitution, out of compliance sex offenders and more. One man arrested was the brother of a Lodi City Council Member.
Operation More Than Adequate was a collaborative effort by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, spearheaded by the Lathrop Police Department, and involving over 100 members of 17 different agencies with the single goal of eliminating crimes against persons throughout the county.
Between April 12th and April 16th, 2021, a total of 94 arrests and citations were made: 23 arrests were for child sex predators, 2 for human trafficking, 4 for pimping/pandering, 16 for prostitution, 19 for solicitation, 6 for possession of a firearm, 18 for out-of-compliance sex offenders, and 4 for traffic citations.
The agencies that participated in Operation More Than Adequate included the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, Lathrop Police Services, Sacramento Police Department, San Joaquin County Women’s Center Youth and Family Services, Department of Justice, Homeland Security, San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, San Joaquin County District Attorney Investigators, Stockton Unified School District, Stockton Police Department, Alcohol Beverage Control, Lodi Police Department, Tracy Police Department, San Joaquin County Probation Department, the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation Office of Correctional Safety-Division of Adult Parole, Deliverfund, Parole Department, and U.S. Marshalls.
Deputies, officers, and agents made contact with potential predators using platforms commonly used for exploiting minors. According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office’s post, the suspects clearly believed they were talking with a 13-year-old. “Once the probable cause was established, a meeting with the suspect was scheduled and an arrest made.” Additionally, the operation targeted out-of-compliance sex offenders and persons on probation or parole for sex crimes, sex traffickers, prostitution, pimping, and pandering. Over twice as many arrests were made in this operation compared to the last operation of the same type.
One of those arrested in Operation More Than Adequate was 42-year-old Afzal Khan, brother of Lodi City Council Member Shak Khan. Afzal Khan was arrested for contacting and meeting a child under 14 for the purposes of lewd and lascivious acts. The Grape Vine reached out to Council Member Khan for comment.
Council Member Khan told us that he is not close with his brother, nor have they seen each other for six months. Though he loves his brother, he is keeping his distance and does not want to get involved in the case. Council Member Khan went on to say that his brother has been married for twenty years and has five children, but if he did something wrong he should be held accountable! There should be no tolerance for those sorts of acts!
